In our first Rhode Island Fundraiser, we are proud to feature a mix of classical and folk dances, featuring renowned Kuchipudi artist Prafulla Vellury, renowned Oddissi Artist Mouli Pal and their accomplished shishyas. To give this fundraiser a unique heartbeat is a percussion ensemble of Mridangam Vidwan Pravin Sitaram and his accomplished students.

About the Artists
“Natya Sudhalahari” Prafulla Velury is an accomplished Kuchipudi dancer, choreographer, Carnatic singer and Guru. She has choreographed and performed Kuchipudi ballets, anchored educational shows for children and also anchored shows based on Telugu Movies. In the United States, Prafulla has been teaching Kuchipudi Dance & Carnatic Vocal to students of all ages since 1999. Prafulla and her students have performed at many places and events, including many for fund-raising. Receiving rave reviews and accolades have been a constant throughout Prafulla’s career.
Upasana is a premier Institution for the promotion and preservation of Odissi dance. Based in the Boston area of New England, we follow the philosophies and techniques of the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Our programs, instructions and events are conducted under the direction of Mouli Pal who is considered as one of the foremost Odissi exponents of USA. The group also features several accomplished dancers trained under renowned Gurus in India.
Dr. Pravin Sitaram hails from a family in Mumbai that is steeped in Carnatic music tradition. Introduced to mridangam at the age of 8, Pravin has learnt this art from his Guru, Shri P. S. Parameswaran – a disciple of the legendary Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer. He has also had some advanced training under Shri Palghat Raghu in Mumbai.
Pravin’s sensitive and unobtrusive approach to mridangam accompaniment has been appreciated by one and all. Pravin has accompanied several artistes of outstanding caliber & repute the likes of whom include Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. R. K. Srikantan, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Smt. R. Vedavalli, Violin maestros – Shri G. J. R. Krishnan, Lalgudi Smt. Vijayalakshmi & Shri Mysore Manjunath to name a few. Pravin has accompanied several visiting and local artistes in many concerts.
Pravin is a sought after teacher in the Boston area, teaching mridangam to several students over the past several years. He is a member of the faculty at the Learnquest Academy of Music. His students have participated and won prizes in competitions held in North America. A couple of his students have had some advanced training under the able tutelage of the Late Sangeetha Kalanidhi Shri Palghat Raghu. In 2009, the Massachusetts state government awarded Pravin and his student Ullas Rao the Traditional Arts Apprenticeship fellowship.
